Recorded in three days, WOLFONI’s new album is a sonic snapshot of what this band delivers on stage: music rooted in rockabilly, but enriched with blues-rock influences. If Clément Palant, the drummer, sings the famous Riot ln Cell Block#9, created by The Coasters in the 50s and blown apart by Dr Feelgood 25 years later, Gil Riot, the guitarist, takes the lead on the rock’n’rolls created by the band: I Won’t Cry Over It and My Shoes and Me, as well as on timeless classics from the 40s, 50s and 80s: Delmore Brothers (Blues Stay Away From Me), Charlie Rich (Lonely Weekends), and the excellent British band Restless (Ice Cold). Then he spices up the album with a decidedly twangy instrumental of his own composition: Mandrake. Mister Tof, the trio’s double bassist, proves that the truly good things are timeless by performing tracks spanning several decades of rock’n’roll: Primitive by The Groupies, Devil and Miss Jones by Mike Ness, the astonishing Tornado by The Jiants, as well as Makin’ Monsters For My Friends by the Ramones, run through the WOLFONI machine... The rhythm section, made up of energetic, woody drums paired with a swinging, generous double bass, supports in fine style an electric guitar steeped in the syrup of the pioneers, heir to a holy lineage of rockers, from Carl Perkins to Link Wray... The three musicians of WOLFONI, friendly pirates from the north coast of Brittany, offer a record that reflects them: rock, cheeky, nervous and danceable. WOLFONI is a true trio, with no leader, each taking turns on lead vocals, backed by the other two on backing vocals. The show is electric, danceable, stripped-down, fun and timeless: the drums roll, the double bass swings and rocks, and the guitar blazes. Their second album, soon to be released on the Rennes label Beast Records, is faithful to their live performances. In a painfully troubled world, the members of WOLFONI are determined to eradicate boredom and set the stage alight, which makes them, in a peaceful way, killers from the north coast.
