The Unyielding Season

Description

Double fuchsia vinyl with bonus track British black metal pioneers, WINTERFYLLETH, make their mark with their new album, *The Unyielding Season*, due March 27th, 2026, via Napalm Records. This ninth offering is a social commentary wrapped in carefully crafted poetry and prose. Whilst the previous album, *The Imperious Horizon* (2024), depicted a malevolent and looming force, *The Unyielding Season* now explores the materialisation of that threat. This raging wildfire is contrasted against the calculating chill of its predecessor. The band’s first offering for their new label is both a reflection of, and rebellion against, the torments that tear individuals apart. It is a scream against the unendurable weight of fear and pressure imposed by the agents of an evil, unyielding and unsettling force. “Heroes Of A Hundred Fields” is the first revolt of their ten-song manifesto, describing brave spirits joining forces against a common oppressor to fight for their freedom. With “Echoes In The After”, WINTERFYLLETH deliver a striking epic: adapted from a poem in Sir Philip Sidney's novel, *The Countess Of Pembroke’s Arcadia*, this track was written in reaction to the felling of the iconic 'Robin Hood' tree at Sycamore Gap, on Hadrian's Wall, in the North East of the United Kingdom. The song unfurls in wondrous grandeur and calls for the “beacons of rebellion” to be lit against a tide of evil. The following track, “A Hollow Existence”, opens with galloping percussion and explodes into a black metal firework display that is both aggressive and atmospheric. The band’s iconic sound continues through “Perdition’s Flame” to the album's title track, a powerful observation of our world's current plight and a voice for those silenced by its hostility. The masters of the atmospheric, WINTERFYLLETH, then suspend their rage, making way for “Unspoken Elegy”, an instrumental carried by acoustic guitar, enriched by cello melodies that are both hopeful and menacing – an unsettlingly beautiful illustration of the dichotomy present in *The Unyielding Season*. “In Ashen Wake” picks up the perilous tone, taking its time before revealing itself as another highly melodic black metal saga. “Toward Elysium” builds on this with an old-style-inspired guitar riff, captivating and driving. After another instrumental, the beautifully structured “Where Dreams Once Grew”, WINTERFYLLETH close the album with a cover of “Enchantment” by fellow countrymen Paradise Lost, originally released as the opening track to their 1995 classic, *Draconian Times*. Whilst our environment becomes more challenging each day, WINTERFYLLETH offers a pause for respite and resistance. The world is aflame, and *The Unyielding Season* is a warning.
