For Mahalia, With Love

Description

After GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER, JAMES BRANDON LEWIS’s new tribute stems from a passion inherited from his grandmother and is dedicated to gospel singer MAHALIA JACKSON. Rocked from an early age by these gospels (among which Wade in the Water, covered here, is one of the highlights), the tenor saxophonist builds this moving album from an emotional memory. “When I listen to you, I hear Buddha, Confucius, I hear the deep meaning of life,” said SONNY ROLLINS during a recent conversation between the two tenor players. Note that the first edition of For Mahalia, With Love is being released as a limited double format (2 x CD or 2 x LP) with These Are Soulful Days, performed for the first time worldwide at the Wroclaw festival with the contemporary Polish classical string quartet LUTOSLAWSKI, as a bonus track.
