Springs Eternal is the most ambitious and playful creation to date from critically acclaimed and Mercury-nominated artist William Doyle, delivering superb art-pop. Across 11 tracks, we hear narrators who find themselves at the precipice – of global disaster, of heartbreak, of addiction, of indoctrination or mental illness – until they disappear into the great unknown. The lyrics, by turns heartfelt and ironic, direct and allegorical, are accompanied by infectious melodies and often a genuine nonchalance. Co-produced by independent super-producer Mike Lindsay (Tunng, LUMP) in his Margate-based MESS studio, we hear the siren song of sea-fairies coil around pulsating electronics and soulful instrumentation, with contributions from musicians Alexander Painter, Genevieve Dawson and Brian Eno. Springs Eternal is the next chapter in William Doyle’s sonic odyssey, which began as East India Youth (Total Strife Forever, 2014; Culture of Volume, 2015) and has developed under his own name, producing the critically acclaimed records Your Wilderness Revisited (2019) and Great Spans of Muddy Time (2021). Alongside his own output, Doyle recently produced Anna B Savage’s debut album, A Common Turn (2021), and performs in Orlando Weeks’ band.
