Springs Eternal is the most ambitious and playful creation of William Doyle, the Mercury-nominated, critically acclaimed artist, who delivers superb art pop. Across 11 tracks, we hear narrators who find themselves on the brink of the precipice, of global disaster, of heartbreak, addiction, indoctrination, or mental illness, until they disappear into the great unknown. The lyrics, alternately sincere and ironic, direct and allegorical, are accompanied by contagious melodies and often a frank nonchalance. Co-produced by super-producer Mike Lindsay (Tunng, LUMP) in his MESS studio in Margate, we hear the siren song of the sea winding around pulsing electronics and moving instrumentation, with contributions from musicians Alexander Painter, Genevieve Dawson and Brian Eno. Springs Eternal is the next chapter in William Doyle’s sonic odyssey, which began under the name East India Youth (Total Strife Forever, 2014; Culture of Volume, 2015) and developed under his own name, producing the critically acclaimed records Your Wilderness Revisited (2019) and Great Spans of Muddy Time (2021). Alongside his own production, Doyle recently produced Anna B Savage’s debut album, A Common Turn (2021), and plays in Orlando Weeks’ band.
