"Apt for Viols and Voices." This is how the fusion of voices and viols is mentioned in many sources from the English Renaissance. This album is dedicated to two of the most important composers of this era who left us a significant body of "consorts" for viols in 4 to 6 parts, as well as moving "consort songs." Both served the court: Elizabeth I for the first, James I for the second. The elder remains faithful to the basic principles of polyphony learned from his master Thomas Tallis, for whom he wrote the poignant elegy Ye Sacred Muses. The younger, a virtuoso of the viol, leads his instrument into new paths and develops his polyphony in bold ways.
