Angel Olsen releases Whole New Mess, an intimate and vulnerable self-portrait that shows her grappling with a period of personal turmoil. Whole New Mess sees Olsen healing her open wounds and calming her raw nerves with just a few guitars and a microphone, isolated in a century-old church in the Pacific Northwest. Whole New Mess comes after All Mirrors, the critically acclaimed masterpiece released in 2019. At least nine of the eleven songs on Whole New Mess should sound familiar to anyone who has listened to All Mirrors. 'Lark', 'Summer', 'Chance' – all of these can be found in this new album in a stripped-down form and with slightly different titles. But these new tracks are not the demos of All Mirrors. On the contrary, Whole New Mess is a complete album, with its own mindset. While the sumptuous orchestral arrangements and cinematic scope of All Mirrors are the lens Angel Olsen chose to show her scars to the world, Whole New Mess gives shape and meaning to those wounds.
