Whirr and Luster have been gravitating around each other for years, united by a common language made of "glide" guitars, distant vocals, and a sound volume elevated to emotion. A common thread reinforced by the involvement of Nick Bassett, who produced and mixed most of Luster's previous recordings. The split record *Whirr & Luster* brings together one of the most iconic bands of American shoegaze and one of its most striking new voices around four unreleased tracks. Available in 12-inch EP, CD, and digital formats via Freewhirl Records. For Whirr, split records are sacred. More than ten years after helping to define the landscape of modern and powerful shoegaze ("heavy-shoegaze"), the San Francisco Bay Area quintet returns with its first new songs in years. "Spiral Again" opens the record in Whirr's characteristic style: an avalanche of guitars enveloping lyrics about losing oneself in the attraction of another - a spiral, an intertwining, a shared fall. Next comes "Wish I Could Give You The World," one of the most openly romantic songs ever recorded by the band; a track made of imagery evoking a blazing fire and dizzying devotion, where desire is expressed at full volume. Produced by Whirr and Zac Montez, these two tracks showcase the band at the height of their art: massive while being imbued with tenderness. On the other side, the band Luster, hailing from Los Angeles, confirms its status as a leading figure of the new shoegaze generation. Formed with the intention of evolving the genre rather than reproducing it identically, Luster incorporates electronic pulses and 90s sound textures into their "glide" guitar walls; the two tracks present here testify to a brilliant form. "Against the World" is a love song evoking a closed door - you and me against the whole world - both claustrophobic and comforting. "Forever" closes the record in a haze of repetitions evoking a doomed romance; a mantra ("do you feel it now?") that ultimately dissolves in the certainty that nothing lasts. Also produced with Zac Montez, these tracks prove one thing: Luster are not mere students of the genre. They are peers. Together, these four songs form a conversation. They speak of distance, obsession, and the pain of never being able to give enough to the other - a dialogue that crosses two coasts and two generations of a genre that refuses to stagnate.
