Carve + Gaze

Description

WEN releases his EP Carve + Gaze via Big Dada, which follows in the lineage of his dark EP and single productions released on labels such as Tectonic, Keysound and Soundman Chronicles. Inspired in part by “Glaze Theory,” a concept that explains the way we digest art and the knowledge needed to build a creative process, the heart of the EP centers on the consumption and critique of his own work. Carve + Gaze brings together tracks that came to WEN while he was spending long rainy nights driving around his city, Kent. The artist developed an obsession with the way the rain fell on his window and managed to translate it into his sound and visual universe. These nocturnal downpours became like the coating of the four tracks on this EP. Pieces like “Femme II,” featuring a cleverly placed sample from former Section Boyz member Reeko Squeeze, set a darker, more anxiety-inducing backdrop pierced by an imperceptible and threatening female voice. On this EP, WEN sculpts sound. Carve + Grave is a cohesive and detailed masterpiece that sounds like an allegory where each track is a symbol and leads to something larger; it holds almost a hidden meaning that the listener must discover for themselves.
