Diamond Grove

Description

Weirs, an experimental collective from North Carolina, presents Diamond Grove as a living testament to a place, a moment, and a community of friends. True to this approach, the musicians chose to record directly on a Virginia farm, using the house, outbuildings, and surrounding sounds as creative sources. This choice gives the album an identity deeply rooted in its environment, with each track bearing the concrete imprint of the place where it was shaped. This unique approach is evident from the opening track, "I Want to Die Easy," a revisited traditional hymn. Inspired by a gospel version, the song abandons any quest for immaculate authenticity to embrace the sonic imperfections of its recording setting. The voice, imbued with profound melancholy, is enveloped by a natural two-second reverberation produced by the farm's silo. Here, the site itself becomes an integral part of the music, on par with instruments and voices, giving the track a timeless yet decidedly contemporary dimension. Around Oliver Child-Lanning, a constellation of musicians from bands such as Fust, Mipso, and Magic Tuber Stringband gather. This fluid formation, which rejects any idea of a fixed line-up, allows for a circulation of influences and sensibilities, enhancing the richness of the whole. With Diamond Grove, Weirs transcends the notion of folk revival to propose a hybrid work, at the crossroads of concrete music and Southern traditions. This album appears as much a musical creation as a historical artifact, a space where past and present intertwine in perpetually transforming sonic matter.
