“Boring Pools” is the second album from Rennes-based band We Only Said, recorded by Eric Orthuon (Laetitia Shériff, Santa Cruz) and mastered by Bob Weston (Shellac). This “Boring Pools” is a true challenge to all post/indie rock sirens, as Florian Marzano and his bandmates had set the bar very high. We are caressed by Stéphane Fromentin’s bass – a member of Trunks, like F. Marzano – transported by the clarity and complementarity of the guitars, and carried away by the distinctly jazz-rock drumming. The lyrics are again by Nathalie Burel, the mastering is still by the legendary Bob Weston (Shellac), and the artwork was entrusted to the talented Eric Mahé, who also worked on Laetitia Sheriff’s last album. The first listen already reveals captivating melodies (“Mitch”) or (“Dry as dust”) early on. The album consists of nine tracks that form a receptacle of melancholy, a foundation upon which Florian Marzano delicately places his voice and offers a setting for dark and fatalistic lyrics (“A Fearful and Violent Hurry”), (“Along All Boring Pools”), even if sometimes the rhythm and voice are more vigorous and enthusiastic (“Everything Turns Cold”). There isn't a single flaw, not even the revisited/alternative version of “Get Out Freakie,” a track already present on the previous album, which offers no other interest than to re-explore this unstoppable song.
