Martha and Jessica Kilpatrick (aka Waterbaby) received a creative education in South London, spending their days singing in the Southwark Cathedral choir or experimenting with cassette recordings – for instance, trying to make their out-of-tune family piano and a flute sound like an electric guitar. Eventually settling into a shared loft apartment in Peckham, the sisters became quiet, mystical forces in London’s underground scene, emerging in and out of the sanctuary of their studio to perform their hypnotic live show with artists as varied as Kedr Livansky, James K, TAAHLIAH, and Dorian Electra. The two sisters’ insular, feminine sonic universe features inventive song structures supported by dizzying production layers – stuck somewhere between the Hyperdub office and a mechanic’s garage. In a world where analogue and digital appear to be in constant conflict, Waterbaby effortlessly solves the equation – operating in a space where Cocteau Twins-esque anachronism meets the sharpest edge of contemporary experimental electronica.
