The highly acclaimed British post-punk band Joy Division was originally called Warsaw. Formed in Manchester, England, in the late 1970s, the band consisted of Ian Curtis on vocals, Bernard Albrecht (a.k.a. Sumner, a.k.a. Dicken) on guitar, Peter Hook on bass, and Stephen Morris on drums. Hook, Albrecht, and Curtis met at a local concert and later formed the band Warsaw. The band's name is derived from a composition by David Bowie and Brian Eno, Warszawa. The 5 bonus tracks on this album are demos recorded by the band at Pennine Studios in Manchester on July 18, 1977, with Steve Brotherdale on drums. The first eleven tracks presented here are the result of a recording session for this album that took place in early May 1978. The rehearsals leading up to the session allowed for the addition of two new songs to the band's existing repertoire: "Interzone" and "Transmission." Interzone is based on the backing track of the song Keep On Keepin' On, to which the band added their own lyrics. The result was a song that was uniquely theirs. "Transmission" was written by the band during the last week of rehearsals. The first verse contains a quote from Alistair Crowley's book, The Book Of Thoth. Both recordings are interesting interpretations of songs that would later become famous.
