Horowitz plays Scriabin

Description

« My own interest in Scriabin's piano music dates back to my earliest student years. At that time, the great piano masters including Rachmaninoff and Hofmann played Scriabin's works in concert and recital. After Scriabin's death in 1915, Rachmaninoff himself dedicated a series of recitals exclusively to Scriabin in Russia, in memory of the composer. Then it was my great colleague and friend Artur Rubinstein who gave the first performances of essential works in the major cities of Europe. After that, there is no doubt that Scriabin's music was somewhat absent from recital programs. But I think the time has now come to rediscover his music which has so exemplarily enriched the piano literature of his time. » Vladimir HorowitzLet us simply recall that Scriabin is one of the last giants of piano literature between the two centuries that mark his existence. Influenced in turn by Chopin, Liszt, and Wagner, he quickly evolved towards a writing of a profusion of expressive gestures with stunning modernity. His writing is reputed to be extremely complex and scholarly but also of a unique philosophical dimension. It contains the most beautiful pages of all piano music and constitutes the spearhead of the Russian pianistic school in particular. Vladimir Horowitz (himself born in Kiev in 1903) remains historically its most eminent representative and its greatest interpreter. CDs 1 & 2 have been remastered from the original analog tapes using 24 bit/96 Khz technology.
