Víkingur Ólafsson, the virtuoso Icelandic pianist and one of the most acclaimed classical artists of our time, unveils his new project, “From Afar.” Inspired by his encounter with György Kurtág, this work features beautifully performed tracks and forgotten melodies. Víkingur revisits some of his earliest musical passions. It includes pieces by Bach, Mozart, Schumann, Brahms, Kaldalóns, Bartók, Kurtág, and Birgisson, as well as the world premiere recording of Thomas Adès’s “The Branch.” This album contains two recordings of the same arrangements performed on two different pianos: one on a Steinway concert grand and the other on an upright piano. Innovating as never before, Víkingur creates two distinct musical soundscapes that appeal to both traditional audiences and those who listen exclusively via streaming.
