Computer Future is the third sprawling and ambitious album from the amorphous garage rock band Velociraptor from Brisbane, Australia! The 14-track opus is the best recorded capture to date of everything that makes the Raptors so beloved, a flow of catchy and addictive rockers characterized by stupidly contagious melodies, an abundance of earworm hooks, plentiful guitars, and of course their signature gang vocals and harmonies. The shadowy cabal behind Velociraptor has returned from a time away from the spotlight with renewed vigor and focus, more engaged and appreciative of their combined talents and chemistry than their young children, who may have been more concerned with chasing good times than long ones. These days, there are more cooks in the Raptors' kitchen than ever before, but this has only allowed them to broaden the palette of the Computer Future menu without compromising quality. Their distinct melodic approach to garage rock is still quite evident, except it is now enhanced by eccentrically compelling sonic detours into psychedelic and new wave realms, with the band sounding entirely like themselves and no one else (except perhaps the title tracks indebted to Devo). At their peak, Velociraptor was a force to be reckoned with, an amorphous collective sometimes boasting 12 members—many of whom wielded guitars of some kind—who partied and played even harder, attacking their shows with unbridled joy and genuine enthusiasm. They toured Europe and the UK, and played with bands of the caliber of Black Lips, New York Dolls, OFF!, Radio Birdman, and Violent Soho. The unparalleled camaraderie of their famous live blitzes—along with the size of the band—sometimes threatened to overshadow the true strength of their songwriting and recorded production, but now, with Computer Future, those concerns firmly belong to the past!
