Description
"I am part of the generation that witnessed the birth of French rap, and with it, the enormous enthusiasm for this music from the children of the second and third generations of immigrants. I wanted to dig deeper than rap, to explore the artists of the French language who convey the poetry of urgency, the poetry that is raw and engaged despite itself because the context leaves it no choice. The poetry of the damned of the earth. This project, both musical and cultural heritage, responds to a need: to (re)give a voice to the new generations growing up in France with a lack of identification, a forgetting of their parents' history in the political and cultural landscape they navigate as they grow up. It writes another history of music in French. At the intersection of the liberation struggles of their countries of origin, labor struggles, and exiles, it crystallizes a time when struggles built brotherhoods, affirmations, dignity, connections between oppressed peoples, and convergences that the history taught in schools does not mention. This record is therefore a statement, a piece of memory that shows that the field of possibilities was open for a brief moment before being closed again, plunging us into individualism, short-term thinking, and a lack of societal projects." Rocé The deluxe digipak includes a 40-page booklet, and the double vinyl comes with a 36-page booklet featuring color photos and original covers, a statement of intent written by the rapper Rocé, and commentary by historians Naïma Yahi and Amzat Boukari-Yabara, who describe the contexts of the time and the countries from which the tracks originate.
