Composed of Mark Stein (vocals, organ), Vincent Martell (guitar, vocals), Tim Bogert (bass, vocals), and Carmine Appice (drums, vocals), the band was originally known as The Pigeons and gained notoriety for their radical, slow, and heavy interpretations of current hits. They signed with Atco Records, a division of Atlantic, in April 1967 and changed their name at the insistence of Atlantic founder Ahmet Ertegun to Vanilla Fudge. Their radical cover of the Supremes' hit "You Keep Me Hanging On" was released as a single in June 1967. Dominated by the punchy approach of their rhythm section and Mark Stein's powerful Hammond organ playing, it became a top 10 hit in the U.S. The band's self-titled debut album was released in August 1967 and was a true tour de force of psychedelic rock, featuring a seven-minute version of "You Keep Me Hanging On," as well as imaginative covers of compositions by The Beatles, The Zombies, and Curtis Mayfield, among others. Over the next two years, VANILLA FUDGE recorded a series of albums that evolved from psychedelic rock to heavy rock and influenced many emerging bands, including Deep Purple, before disbanding in 1970. This nine-CD box set has been remastered from the original Atco tapes and includes the albums "VANILLA FUDGE" and "THE BEAT GOES ON" (in both mono and stereo versions) and "RENAISSANCE," "NEAR THE BEGINNING," and "ROCK & ROLL." The first five albums recorded between 1967 and 1969! It also includes a complete concert recorded at Fillmore West on New Year's Eve 1968/1969 on two CDs and a multitude of session outtakes and singles. The box set also features an illustrated booklet with a new essay including exclusive interviews with Mark Stein and Carmine Appice.
