After the success of its last four projects and 4 Grammy Awards including Album of the Year in 2020, the band Vampire Weekend presents its new opus Only God Was Above Us. Largely inspired by New York and recorded around the world (NY, LA, London, Tokyo), the album is according to singer Ezra Koenig his own version of "Dark Side of the Moon meeting Paul's Boutique." It was produced by Ezra Koenig and his longtime collaborator Ariel Rechtshaid. Only God Was Above Us evokes universal themes: the desire to question the world we live in, the quest for a peace that can only be found through acceptance. The album is both as direct and complex as anything the group has released up to now, as beautiful and melodic as ever, and shows Vampire Weekend at its best. The title is taken directly from the album cover, which is a photo taken by photographer Steven Siegel in a ghost subway in New Jersey in 1988.
