Description

Formed in the late 90s, the band Unwed Sailor, hailing from Tulsa, offers a unique instrumental pop, dominated by bass and tinged with post-rock, oscillating between raw power and airy melody. After a ten-year hiatus, their return in 2019 was marked by an intense period of creative exploration and genre fusion, giving rise to their best albums to date, including Mute The Charm (2023), Underwater Over There (2024), and Cruel Entertainment (2025). For their eleventh album, High Remembrance, founding member Johnathon Ford brought a series of sketches, demos, and melodies recorded at home into the studio. These pieces came to life with his long-time collaborators, Matt Putman (drums) and David Swatzell (guitar), driven by themes such as nostalgia and the sweet comfort of memories. Through its eight tracks, the album blends influences such as the fervor of the golden age of alternative rock, the confidence of late 70s AM radio, and the exhilaration of New Wave, among other references that defy easy categorization. The first single, "West Coast Prism," combines an unforgettable melodic chorus with an infectious rhythm and a crystalline arrangement that transforms into a vibrant and colorful refrain. True to its title, the song evokes white light breaking into a spectrum, while airy synthesizers and soft harmonies create an aura of melancholic bliss. Ford draws much of his inspiration from the project's origins while constantly evolving it with new ideas, arrangements, and fresh musical influences. His bass playing, driven by precise chords, remains the common thread throughout all the band's albums, giving each new release a familiar gravity and warmth.
