Star of the “Festival au Désert” in Timbuktu in 2012, MOHAMED ISSA AG OUMAR El ANSARI, nicknamed MEDISSA by those close to him, founded in 1993 the sub-Saharan ensemble IMARHAN TIMBUKTU, which performs on stages throughout Mali. The repertoire (five tracks on this fascinating compilation) remains, of course, rooted in Tuareg tradition, desert blues with a haunting, swaying feel, adorned with the delicate flourishes of electric guitars. OUSMANE AG OUMAR contributes solo on two songs. DINTCHÉRÉ is a young ensemble from the rising generation, responsible for the three remaining tracks. These echoes from Timbuktu convey three waves of emotion: shock, sadness, and consternation. The world of the Malian people has, of course, been shaken.
