Umeko Ando (1932-2004) was a Japanese folk singer, representative of Ainu culture from Hokkaido Island in northern Japan. Her first album, Ihunke, was recorded in 2000 with Ainu musician and dub producer Oki Kano. It was released only in Japan and on CD. The album is being released for the first time on vinyl. The 16 tracks it contains are delicate gems built on Oki Kano's tonkori (five-string harp) patterns, over which Umeko Ando develops her iterative and mantric singing. These songs possess a vibrant mystical energy.
