With Ty Segall, the pope of Californian psych garage is trying his hand at the self-titled album format for the second time, the first dating back to 2008. He has surrounded himself with a full band made up of both his regular collaborators like Mikal Cronin and Charles Moothart, as well as Emmett Kelly (Angel Olsen, Bonnie "Prince" Billy) and Ben Boye (Angel Olsen, Riley Walker). While the angry guitars and punchy vocals are still there, Ty Segall also shows that he is capable of great sensitivity with tracks like 'Orange Color Queen', imbued with softness. Visceral and penetrating, this album probably contains the most striking songs since Slaughterhouse (2012), as well as top-tier acoustic performances. A manipulator of reality with a boundless imagination, Ty Segall here becomes more introspective, playing on the transparency of harmonies, rhythms, and emotions.
