First Taste

Description

First Taste offers an introspective backdrop, a departure from the extroverted nature of Freedom's Goblin, but it's just as imbued with festive rhythms as its predecessor. The production here is insane, more alien than familiar, with tones and rhythms proliferating beneath our ears. There are mountains of percussion and instruments... of all kinds. Horns and synthesizers. Folk pianos too. Always overheating, Ty Segall's creative neurons suggested he write and record First Taste with radically new instrumentation – koto, recorder, bouzouki, harmonizer, mandolin, saxophones and brass, vocals, and of course, a hint of keyboards. And the drums – plural! – in the left speaker, that's Ty you hear, while Charles Moothart, the Freedom Band's drummer, plays on the kit on the right. Whatever the mood of the track, the pedal is pushed to the limit, as much on the lightest ballads as on the most furious rock songs. Ty's vocal prowess, always a highlight, offers refreshing relief from his mutant orchestra and allows tension to seep through his more patient songs, perfectly mastering his wild screams. First Taste isn't really a first attempt for Ty, but this new effort still manages to offer us a remarkably fresh and unprecedented taste. With flavors to discover every day!
