"Live" "At" "The" "Bbc"

Description

Flashback: to a time of big guys and even bigger babies, a time strangely similar to our own... but simpler, wasn't it? January 2016. The times: scary. Tomorrow: non-existent. It was in this state of mind that the album Emotional Mugger was created: a truly unhinged sketch in that dark January, ten years ago. Riding high on the success of his 2014 album Manipulator and the months of touring that followed, Ty Segall was ready to give his all, to explore every extreme and offbeat scene that came to his mind. Emotional Mugger, with its biting and sarcastic humor, made a big impact, featuring eleven of the grimiest, most monstrous tracks in the Segall catalog. The fun didn't stop there. Ty played most of the parts on the album, with the exception of a few key contributions from close collaborators, including Cory Hanson and Evan Burrows of Wand, Emmett Kelly and Mikal Cronin of The Cairo Gang, and King Tuff himself, Kyle Thomas. The chemistry was so strong with this group that he dubbed them The Muggers, donned a rubber baby mask (with an opening for his mouth to scream), and they hit the road a few weeks before the album's release, crisscrossing the US until the end of March, then heading to Europe for more dates. That's when "LIVE" "AT" "THE" "BBC" was born. While touring the UK, the band played four gigs in five days: just enough time for a session with Mark Riley for the BBC! A piece of cake, in more ways than one. After fifty concerts, the Muggers were in full swing, their monstrous five-headed lineup fully supporting Ty. Unleashing nineteen minutes of their usual show, the audacity of Ty and the Muggers shines through every moment, with a peculiar touch of strangeness as Cory, Emmett, Mikal, and Kyle join in on backing vocals. The venue seems barely big enough to contain their overflowing energy as they tear through four selected tracks from Emotional Mugger and a defiant provocation, their unhinged version of The Doors' “L.A. Woman.” And yes, it’s undeniably heavy. Why did it take us so long to release this? Who knows, maybe the engraving? And yes, one side with all the music, the other with a reproduction of the Babyman mask that has haunted so many fans through long nights of introspection ever since. Relive the trauma, and you'll love "LIVE" "AT" "THE" "BBC."
