Myself in the Way is the fifth album by Turnover, following their first break after touring for nearly 10 years. During the lockdowns, the four members of Turnover spent their time meditating, painting, volunteering as firefighters, skateboarding, and working in national parks—deepening their interests and rooting themselves in places they hadn’t been able to while living on the road for so long. For 18 months, these individual experiences served as fertile ground for Myself in the Way. Back in Pennsylvania to record with his longtime friend and producer Will Yip, singer and guitarist Austin Getz cites Quincy Jones, Chic, and Dark Side of the Moon as influences that make songs like the rhythmic and infectious "Ain't Love Heavy" and the trippy and disorienting "Tears of Change" feel more expansive, deeper, and more complete than anything the band has done so far. The new skills of drummer Casey Getz behind the kit open the songs of Myself in the Way to more improvisation and fluidity, blending well with the catchy bass lines of bassist Dan Dempsey and the refined guitar and piano work of Nick Rayfield.
