Austin Getz, lead singer, doesn’t hesitate to sum up Turnover’s third album, Good Nature, in one word when asked. “Learning,” he says. “This whole record is about learning. Opening your eyes to new things, stepping outside your comfort zone, and learning how to grow into something new.” The album’s unique stylistic blend is immediately apparent from the first track, “Super Natural,” a summer idyll with intertwining guitar parts and laid-back vocals. Listening to how the tranquil “Nightlight Girl” fits alongside the driving chorus of “Breeze,” and how the track “Good Nature” flows as a harmonious whole, it seems evident that the four band members paid particular attention to a certain perfectionism of artists of the past: the variety of textures, tempos, and dynamics on Good Nature is partly influenced by bossa nova, cool jazz, electronic music, and psychedelic grooves. This influx of new influences and inspiration, guided by producer Will Yip (Incendiary, Xibalba, Citizen), gives birth to the band’s best album to date.
