On his 2021 album *Friends in High Places*, Turner Cody collaborated for the first time with Nicolas Michaux and The Soldiers of Love (Clément Nourry, Ted Clark, and Morgan Vigilante). This album marked a decisive turning point for Turner Cody… But *Friends in High Places* was just the beginning. *Out For Blood* pushes what Cody and The Soldiers started even further. If *Friends in High Places* merely opened the door to country music for Cody’s songwriting, *Out For Blood* literally kicks it down. His poetic lyricism paints portraits inspired by American mythologies, exploring themes such as freedom, individualism, destiny, sin, and redemption. Rooted in traditional narratives yet resonating with our contemporary era, these songs take on the form of parables: imaginary characters confront the ultimate stakes of good and evil. In the vein of Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt, or John Prine, *Out For Blood* establishes itself as a major contribution to the great American songbook. The songs on *Out For Blood* bear witness to a transformation in Turner Cody’s life. While his songwriting already evoked a certain Americana, it primarily reflected his twenty years spent in New York and the legacy of the anti-folk scene — closer to the Velvet Underground than to Hank Williams. Then came the move: Cody and his family left New York to settle in St. Louis, on the banks of the Mississippi. This change of scenery and perspective nurtured a new way of writing. The challenge for Nicolas Michaux and The Soldiers of Love was clear: to preserve the subtlety and textural work of *Friends in High Places* while integrating the country heritage of the new songs. The collaboration between Cody and Michaux is the meeting of an artist who writes in the language of poetry and another who masters sonic texture. The Soldiers of Love are much more than a backing band: their influences range from jazz to fusion, from pop to Congolese rhythms.
