For the past 24 years, Tunde Adebimpe has been primarily known as the co-founder, co-lead singer, and primary songwriter for TV On The Radio. That art-rock band navigated two decades of wildly volatile cultural shifts to become one of the most beloved, enduring, and influential bands to emerge from the early 2000s NYC rock scene. This debut solo album is not a TV On The Radio record, but in many ways the excitement of doing something all by himself for the first time has lit a similar spark in him to the band’s beginnings. The album title Thee Black Boltz is a nod to Tunde’s propensity for writing and singing about the human condition, in all its forms. It’s his answer to the macro malaise of a post-pandemic world careening towards violent authoritarianism and the personal grief caused by loss over the last few years. Thee Black Boltz is Tunde’s desperate attempt to find small moments of joy amidst the dissonance and sadness, by any means necessary.
