Singing liturgies illuminated by the black of the bodies of peat bogs covered in mud, fascinated by moonlit shimmering nocturnal landscapes and fueled by a queer enchantment, Tristwch y Fenywod is a gothic power group from the Welsh avant-rock scene. Unearthed from the depths of Leeds' experimental underground, the trio consists of Gwretsien Ferch Lisbeth (Guttersnipe, La boucle éphémère), Leila Lygad (Hawthonn), and Sidni Sarffwraig (Slaylor Moon, Les Courtneys). Austere, striking, and enchanting, Tristwch y Fenywod's self-titled album is their first studio recording, following just 10 concerts and a live demo. Formed in 2022, Tristwch y Fenywod ("The Sadness of Women") is recorded exclusively in the Welsh language, evoking a supernatural, underground, and extraterrestrial folk music played on a double zither, an electronic drum, and a bass guitar. With a commanding voice reminiscent of a siren, weaving around Welsh consonants, accompanied by brutal and martial rhythms and swirling strings plucked by claws, Tristwch y Fenywod resembles a first 4AD recording dragged through the waters of an Anglesey marsh. The effect is both haunting and moving. The eight tracks on the record constitute what feels like a recently rediscovered unholy Grail of angry, atmospheric, and occult feminist gothic broadcasts.
