Unpopular Music

Description

A Nashville native, from the heart of the city's burgeoning roots-rock scene, Tristen has established herself over the past twenty years as a prolific and versatile musician. Her talent for crafting captivating melodies and sharp lyrics has earned her high-profile collaborations. She co-wrote Love is an Art, Vanessa Carlton's latest album, and toured with Jenny Lewis as part of her band Voyager. Her folk-oriented debut album, Charlatans at the Garden Gate (211), earned her praise as "Nashville's best-kept secret" (The Boston Globe). Two years later, CAVES, co-produced by Stephen Hague, revealed a new side of her, with SPIN calling her a "hypnotic synth-pop siren." With Sneaker Waves (217), recorded in her home studio with long-time collaborator and husband Buddy Hughen, Tristen took another creative step forward, lauded by Rolling Stone for her "Nilsson-worthy power ballads" and by Ann Powers (NPR) for her catchy arrangements "that won't leave your head." In 221, she released Aquatic Flowers, described by Talkhouse as the work of an artist "beloved by her peers, daring in the studio and always able to find the unexpected, often the incredible." Her fifth album, Unpopular Music, will be released in October and will feature collaborations with Pat Sansone (Wilco), Vanessa Carlton, Becca Mancari, Erin Rae, and Natalie Prass. This release will also mark her big return to the stage, having previously shared bills with Robyn Hitchcock, Television, Ezra Furman, and The Mountain Goats.
