Description

Trainfantome, the former pseudonym of Olivier Le Tohic, is now a Nantes-based band influenced by midwest emo and grunge. At the crossroads between the goths too unhappy to be punk in the '80s, the losers on the fringes of the '90s "alternative" triumph, and the misfits too emo to fit in as the year 2000 arrived, Trainfantome's music brings together several generations of beautiful losers. Sincere and emotional, the songwriting evokes that of the Philadelphia alternative scene: a noisy pop that is raw and sensitive, sometimes shoegaze, sometimes post-hardcore, as if Elliott Smith from Heatmiser had met Deftones in a bar in Brittany. After Mature Immature in 2018, Trainfantome announces a highly anticipated second album as a full band, Thirst. Thirst is set to be a contradictory album, alternating impeccable sounds with more lo-fi textures, as if a proponent of minimal effort was suddenly tormented by a Nietzschean will to power. This paradox allows for the coexistence on the same album of tracks that are almost in demo form alongside others that unconsciously lean towards a more mainstream rock. By exploring musical styles that have already highlighted the dark themes of the record (grunge, lo-fi, emo, indie...), Trainfantome seeks redemption in heavy guitars and raw ballads with intimate lyrics, a contrast found in other great outsiders like Guided by Voices, The Replacements, or Spirit of the Beehive.
