Tony Williams is certainly among those unique drummers in today's jazz whose work has had and continues to have a lasting influence on various styles. At the age of 16, saxophonist Jackie McLean brought him into his band in New York. He also made his first recording with McLean. Shortly thereafter, at 17, Williams was already making waves in Miles Davis's second Quintet. Nearly twenty years later, on May 30 and 31, 1980, Tony Williams went to the Zuckerfabrik recording studio in Stuttgart, Germany, accompanied by Tom Grant (keyboards, synthesizer; he joined this group on Jeff Lorber's recommendation) and Patrick O'Hearn (bass, synthesizer). In the 1970s and early 1980s, this studio was a renowned address for all kinds of audio productions. Larry Coryell, Wolfgang Dauner, Stephane Grappelli, Elvin Jones, Martin Kolbe + Ralf Illenberger, Volker Kriegel, Alphonse Mouzon, John Scofield, and the United Jazz+Rock Ensemble recorded there, to name just a few.
