Indonesia and jazz? Not so far-fetched! Improvisation is part of traditional gamelan, and modal playing goes back 1,000 years; jazz only began to seriously delve into modes with Miles Davis in the 1950s. American clarinet icon Tony Scott proselytized jazz during his six-year stay in Asia and, in doing so, brought masters of Asian music, including the musicians on this album, into the jazz world. Down Beat called pianist Bubi Chen “The Art Tatum of Asia,” and saxophonist Marjono, whose influences include John Coltrane, is an authority on traditional Balinese and Javanese music. Performing their previously unreleased ethno-jazz arrangements, this inimitable lineup even toured Europe and opened the Berlin Jazz Days in 1967. The album has been remastered from the original analog master tapes by Christoph Stickel (mastering cs) with the vinyl receiving AAA treatment. The original artwork is complemented by a bonus insert with additional liner notes, images, and a scan of the original tape box. Until now, getting your hands on this rare LP meant having the luck to buy an expensive original pressing. At last, it is available again for everyone to enjoy!
