During the 90s and 2000s, the Swedish group e.s.t. shook the small world of jazz with about ten internationally recognized albums. After the tragic passing of pianist Esbjörn Svensson, e.s.t. bassist Dan Berglund quickly decided to embark on a new musical adventure. This would materialize in 2009 under the name Tonbruket. In a way, Dan Berglund continued in his own way the work started with Esbjörn's trio. But now, for Tonbruket, the ties to jazz are much more tenuous, and only the leader's background allows today to "shelve" Tonbruket in the "jazz" section. The spirit of this music is more manifested in the freedom the group has to create a unique style without worrying about labels. Throughout this fourth album, Tonbruket continues to mix so many genres that it is almost impossible to clearly identify them. The result is not a patchwork, but rather a magical "post-crossover" formula that leads to the creation of open and ambitious instrumental music, which owes as much to rock as to classical or film music. A music that one can already sense is timeless. Once again, the group keeps us on the edge of our seats while the absence of vocals is never felt: the multitude of sound textures and melodic or rhythmic discoveries captivates the listener. We must commend this ability to offer original and personal music without ever sacrificing accessibility. Tonbruket is not aimed at jazz, classical, rock, or metal enthusiasts. It is aimed at music lovers.
