The true test of originality for any musician comes when you hear an instrument play and you instantly know who is playing it. For electric guitarists, Hendrix certainly qualifies; Page and Clapton do too. Perhaps Eddie Van Halen stands out among the legion of imitators. You probably have your own list, but for us, the guitarist and solo artist of Television, Tom Verlaine, stands shoulder to shoulder (or side by side) with these legends. His self-taught style, influenced by jazz, largely devoid of effects, and his vibrato sound (oh, that tone!) make every Verlaine solo undeniably a Verlaine solo. The fact that he was an accomplished and idiosyncratic songwriter is just a bonus. Real Gone Music is very, very proud to announce that we have arranged with the Verlaine estate to release Tom's last three solo albums on LP, starting with his 1992 instrumental masterpiece Warm and Cool, which has never been released on vinyl in the United States. The country, surf, and even a bit of noir guitar found on Angelo Badalamenti's soundtracks for David Lynch are all given a brilliant new life in a new vinyl mastering by Patrick Derivaz, Verlaine's long-time collaborator, who also played bass on the album. Both avant-garde and familiar, Warm and Cool is as contemporary and cutting-edge as any music being released today, but, as highlighted in the new liner notes by Verlaine's life partner, Jutta Koether, the album fits into a broader context of modern art and philosophy. Indeed, reading Koether's poetic love letter to her dearly departed and listening to this beautiful and bold music is a profound experience that we are eager to share.
