Talking Heads gave rise to several side projects and spin-off acts of quality - David Byrne and Brian Eno’s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Jerry Harrison’s The Red and the Black - but none was as funky, danceable, and simply exhilarating as Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth’s Tom Tom Club. Conceived as a playful interlude away from the stated intellectual and artistic ambitions of the Talking Heads album Remain in Light, their self-titled debut album, released in 1981, was recorded in Barbados with Weymouth’s sisters and Adrian Belew and Steven Stanley, members of the Remain in Light lineup. Not only did it spawn two hits, “Genius of Love” and “Wordy Rappinghood,” but it also became, in its own way, an extremely influential act. It was the sound of downtown New York speaking, listening, and rapping to the beat of the emerging hip-hop movement, a hybrid that could be found in a host of artists in the 80s and 90s, from Madonna to Mariah Carey to the Beastie Boys and many others. Weymouth and Frantz later recorded several more albums under the name Tom Tom Club, but this one remains a classic. For its 45th anniversary, Real Gone Music is proud to offer a transparent vinyl edition with green, pink, and white splatters, echoing the colors of the sleeve and paying tribute to its eclectic musical style. Pure pleasure, limited to 1200 copies!
