Before settling in downtown New York, Mikel Rouse led Tirez Tirez, a Kansas City band founded in the mid-1970s, which bridged new wave, minimalism, and experimental pop. The band gained attention opening for the Talking Heads during their 1978 tour, and David Byrne remained a loyal supporter as Rouse transitioned to the New York experimental scene, where he encountered figures like Arthur Russell. Story Of The Year draws from recordings made during this transition, combining material from Tirez Tirez with later sessions recorded in New York and Brussels. Released in 1982/83 on Les Disques du Crépuscule, the album showcases Rouse's early use of systemic composition in a band format, with layered rhythms and phase-shifting repetitions that would later inform his role in the development of totalism. Situated between Kansas City and New York, between post-punk and contemporary composition, the record captures a pivotal moment, just before Rouse's work fully shifted into a more overtly compositional territory.
