Working closely with producer Bob Ezrin (Kiss, Lou Reed, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper) and his partner Michael Kamen (New York Rock Ensemble, musical director for David Bowie, film and ballet music composer), Tim Curry created a powerful kaleidoscope of every major musical style of the last fifty years, a constraint, a wonderfully rich and funny tour de force. Read My Lips established Tim Curry as one of the strongest and most original artists of our time. The musicians featured on this album provide a hint not only to the ambition of the project but to its overall excellence: the keyboard contributions were made by Lee Michael, Michael Kamen, and producer Ezrin himself; the guitarists include Dick Wagner (Alice Cooper, Lou Reed), John Tropea, and Robin Miller, two remarkable New York session men; Charles Collins, the Philadelphia drummer, and Allen Schwartzberg (Roberta Flack, Alice Cooper), percussionist Jimmy Maelin, and studio bassist Bob Babbitt from both coasts of the US. Other guests contribute: Nils Lofgren, Joe Venuit, Max Kaminsky, and the 48th Highlanders of Toronto Drum Regiment.
From the heraldic magnificence of the Scottish bagpipes on the epic "Wake Nicodemus" to the new arrangement of the Beatles' "I Will," through the funky rock reading of "Harlem On My Mind," Tim manages to cover every musical range with monstrous ease. "Brontosaurus" is filled with delicious heavy riffs appreciated by metalheads, and "Sloe Gin," a track written by Ezrin and Kamen, delivers sumptuous blues.
"Birds Of A Feather," a song written by Carol Pope, manages to convey an ambiguous sexual message in a sleazy title with Afro-Latino undertones, and "Alan" has been described as a Viennese homage by a 30s café orchestra, to beer and sausage!
