Heavenly Sweetness is proud to announce the relaunch of the Ethiopiques series on vinyl. 8 records taken from the remarkable Ethiopiques collection, which since 1997 has helped introduce a wide audience to the treasures of the Ethiopian scene of the 60s and 70s, including some of the founding fathers such as Mulatu Astatke, Mahmoud Ahmed and Tilahun Gessesse. The series has been well known to Global Groove researchers for years, but reached a wider audience thanks to Jim Jarmusch’s film Broken Flowers, which made extensive use of Ethiopian jazz in its soundtrack. Most of these records are classics of groove music and excellent sellers for years, like Fela Kuti albums, the salsa records from the Fania catalog, or the compilations made by Soul Jazz records. Although still completely unknown to Western audiences, Tlahoun Gèssèssè is THE VOICE for Ethiopians! Their first pan-Ethiopian star, unanimously acclaimed from his beginnings in the 60s until his death in 2009. A kind of Ethiopian Johnny Hallyday... and groovy!
