BRILLIANT CORNERS

Description

Third album by Thelonious Monk for Riverside, but the first built around his own compositions, Brilliant Corners (1957) remains a timeless and sublime moment of jazz. The presence of exceptional sidemen (Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Clark Terry, Ernie Henry, Oscar Pettiford, Paul Chambers) obviously adds to the magic of this complex and inspired work. But this record mainly demonstrates the pianist's melodic art (notably on Pannonica and Bemsha Swing) and his mastery of dissonances (I Surrender, Dear, entirely played solo). The "monkism" was born with this brilliant album.
