Afrodisiac

Description

The Veldt, a pioneering group of alternative soul and American shoegaze, formed in 1986 by twins Daniel and Danny Chavis in Raleigh, North Carolina, established itself as one of the most visionary and unclassifiable bands of its time. Joined by David Burris and Marvin Levi, they quickly developed a sound blending ethereal guitar textures with deep R&B roots, creating a style that would influence generations of artists. After signing with Capitol Records in 1989, The Veldt toured extensively in the United States, sharing the stage with The Jesus and Mary Chain and the Cocteau Twins. Ray Shulman, known for his work with Bjork, The Sugarcubes, and The Sundays, produced their landmark 1994 album, Afrodisiac, an album now recognized as a bold fusion of shoegaze, soul, and afro-alternative rock, an album so ahead of its time that it continues to reach new listeners decades later. Afrodisiac is now available for the first time in a deluxe 2LP vinyl edition. This reissue brings new depth and warmth to the swirling guitars, velvety vocals, and hypnotic rhythms of the album, revealing a clarity that underscores the innovative character of The Veldt's sound. The box set also includes two essential remixes of "Soul In The Jar": one by The Jesus and Mary Chain, which imbues the track with their signature haze of distortion, and the other by hip-hop pioneer Diamond D, whose incisive guitar remix adds an infectious touch that redefines the emotional essence of the song. The album's fame has only grown over time. Pitchfork ranked Afrodisiac among the 50 best shoegaze albums of all time, while Stereogum included the single "Until You're Forever" among the 31 essential tracks of the genre, thus confirming The Veldt's status as a founding and innovative band. Afrodisiac is available for the first time in a 2LP vinyl edition and includes an insert.
