The London band The Tubs returns with Dead Meat, their highly anticipated debut album, which is released on Trouble In Mind. The band was formed in 2018 from the ashes of the British post-punk group Joanna Gruesome by former members Owen 'O' Williams and George 'GN' Nicholls. Dead Meat is radiant with hi-fi jangle, incorporating fleeting elements of post-punk and indie, but the band's penchant for traditional British folk and Canterbury folk-rock takes a notable and energetic step forward. The echoes of Fairport Convention's distinctly English chime clash with the lyrics of singer Owen Williams, who revisits the character of the "libertine of the thinking man" from Bryan Ferry and takes it to a more painful perspective. Many songs soar with an urgent riff beneath Williams' acerbic lyrics, reminiscent of a younger, more fiery Richard Thompson. The band has never been so tight and dynamic, often building pressure imperceptibly through an additional layer of guitar, an organ, or a barely audible synth under a chorus or bridge, or unexpected backups from Lan McArdle, the current singer of Ex-Vöid (and former singer of Joanna Gruesome).
