Constantly renewing itself, rejuvenated and freshly reinforced, the Sun Ra Arkestra, under the direction of Marshall Allen, is revealed in Live at the Babylon with its 14-piece Centennial Dream Arkestra, recorded at Istanbul's Babylon club. This concert marked a major milestone on the occasion of the centenary of its founder, the versatile Sun Ra, kicking off the 2014 jubilee tour that took the band around the globe. The ensemble exudes a vibrant energy, a testament to the timelessness and infinitude of its artistic mission. Remarkable talents have grown up in the carefully preserved home of the 90-year-old maestro, Marshall Allen, in Philadelphia, such as pianist Farid Barron, Sun Ra's current representative on Earth. Endowed with an exceptional sense of timing, phrasing and timbre, Barron rivals such piano greats as Art Tatum. After collaborating with Wynton Marsalis's Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, he chose to explore the other end of the jazz continuum.
