The Smashing Pumpkins is an American alternative rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1988. The band was founded by Billy Corgan (singer, guitarist, and main songwriter) and James Iha (guitarist), joined by D'arcy Wretzky (bassist) and Jimmy Chamberlin (drummer) to form the classic lineup. Known for blending alternative rock, grunge, and metal with gothic and psychedelic influences, the band became one of the most influential and popular acts of the 1990s. The Smashing Pumpkins' debut album, *Gish*, was released in 1991. Entering directly at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, the album contains some of the band's biggest hits, such as "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," "1979," "Zero," and "Tonight, Tonight." *Mellon Collie* is often regarded as the band's masterpiece, distinguished by its musical diversity and the epic scope of its compositions.
