Along with Manhattan Transfer, the Singers Unlimited are certainly the most popular vocal group in jazz. When the quartet was founded around 1967, it mainly made money as a provider of advertising jingles. Jazz giant Oscar Peterson later promoted the group’s commercial success, made up of Gene Puerling (baritone and arranger), Len Dresslar (bass), Don Shelton (tenor) and Bonnie Herman (soprano), when he met MPS founder Hans-Georg Brunner Schwer. The quartet’s career began in cooperation with MPS, and they impressed with their own style and formidable technique. 15 albums were created with Musik Produktion Schwarzwald, many of them so technically perfected and processed that, despite the singers’ grandiose studio skills, live accompanying performances were hardly possible. But precisely because of this devotion to developing the densest possible sound of the voice as an instrument, the Singers Unlimited still captivate the listener - Bonnie Herman’s voice in particular is capable of coming very close to an ear. As the first Singers Unlimited Vinyl reissue, MPS is releasing the Christmas album on AAA LP. An analog delight, especially because of the quartet’s a cappella performance - as complete, sparkling and untouched as a layer of fresh snow.
