After writing over 200 songs in six years, The Reds, Pinks and Purples are releasing a collection of previously unreleased tracks in physical format, continuing their romantic exploration of the wonders and woes of everyday life. With titles that sound like sub-chapters from a post-Douglas Coupland novel, The Past Is A Garden I Never Fed plunges us into the turmoil of daily banalities and office conversations, carried by the bittersweet irony of Glenn Donaldson, the central voice of the project. Musically, the album oscillates between the dark days of the Television Personalities and jangly bursts à la Byrds, to verbal outbursts and vocal tenderness à la Jarvis Cocker on Richard In the Age Of The Corporation, with nods ranging from the saturated splendor of Hüsker Dü to the crystalline majesty of The Chameleons. It’s an album that is both touching and galvanizing. The track The World Doesn't Need Another Band perfectly embodies its tone: a measured, almost discreet tirade against ambient mediocrity, sublimated by a magnificent guitar solo. I Only Ever Wanted To See You Fail kicks off with a pre-punk riff à la Eddie And The Hot Rods before dissolving into a tale of doubt and muffled jealousy. As for Toxic Friend, it could have come straight out of Daniel Treacey’s (TVP) notebook, with an uplifting chorus bathed in that vintage indie aesthetic where fuzzy guitar works wonders.
