Based in Brooklyn, James Hinton, aka The Range, will release his new album, Potential, on Domino. For this, The Range drew inspiration from Baltimore club culture, grime, and early 2000s electronica, as well as his status as a member of the last generation to remember going online for the first time. Built around vocal samples discovered in the depths of YouTube, Potential reveals unknown artists whose expression is freed from all the constraints of the music industry. One might be fascinated by the code that determines these YouTube searches, but it is indeed the human stories behind these samples that are striking. To accompany the release of the album "Potential," a documentary titled "Superimpose," directed by Daniel Kaufman, will be released in the spring. It is dedicated to the personal stories behind the unknown artists sampled on the album. As James Hinton points out, "I am very aware that the people I sampled enrich what I do, just as this album carries their work into another environment."
