The Moonlandingz are finally back – not when we wanted them, but now we need them – galloping in on all fours, bareback and screaming, with their much-anticipated new album No Rocket Required. No Rocket Required offers brassy bursts, motorik convulsions, and vocals that are both unsettling and soothing, carried by an impressive list of guest vocalists and preachers: Nadine Shah, Iggy Pop, Jessica Winter, and Ewen Bremner. And of course, there's The Moonlandingz' own frontman, Johnny Rocket, aka Lias Saoudi, who adopts the trembling, lecherous voice of the mysterious R Whites lemonade drinker on Give Me More, before transforming into a kind of Pennine Kris Kristofferson in the middle of the epic Krack Drought Suite, dispensing enigmatic saloon wisdom, perched on a bar stool in Huddersfield. But above all, he is the man we know from Fat White Family, with his gravelly singing (particularly striking in Roustabout, his duet with Nadine Shah) and his exuberant crooner side, like a Working Men's Club leader, Syd Minsky-Sargeant.
