For their first album on Fire Records, the Mekons return with Horror, a record written in 2022 but strangely prophetic in the face of current turmoil. Between criticism of British colonialism, a bleak vision of the climate, and a denunciation of the war economy, the band brilliantly blends punk, rock & roll, dub, country, noise, electronics and Celtic folk. Driven by standout tracks like Mudcrawlers (about the Irish famine), War Economy (with its sharp punchlines) or Fallen Leaves (a haunted ballad about ecological collapse), the album moves between rage, irony and melancholy, in a sound perfected by Dave Trumfio. After nearly 50 years of career, the Mekons continue to innovate, still as committed, unpredictable and powerful as ever.
