Coming from the vibrant American folk scene of the early 1960s, John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty came together to form The Mamas & The Papas, one of the most influential vocal groups of their era. Their inimitable harmonies and West Coast sound left a mark on an entire generation, giving rise to timeless classics such as « California Dreamin' », « Monday, Monday », « I Saw Her Again », « Dedicated to theOne I Love » and « Creeque Alley ». Before their success, each member had followed their own musical path within groups like The Journeymen, The Big Three, The Mugwumps and The Halifax III. Their union in 1965 gave birth to an extraordinary period of creation. The group released five studio albums and charted eleven songs in the Top 40, selling nearly 40 million records worldwide. After the group's initial breakup in 1968, the members embarked on solo careers, with Cass Elliot establishing herself as a major star thanks to hits such as « Make Your Own Kind of Music » and « It's Getting Better », also featured on this compilation. Reunions and new lineups allowed the group to continue into the 1990s. Their legacy was cemented by their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Hit Parade Hall of Fame.
